Mogadishu University has launched a new degree program in Cyber security and Artificial Intelligence (AI), marking a significant step toward preparing Somali students for careers in emerging technologies and strengthening the country’s digital capabilities.
This program which is offered through the university’s Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology is the first degree program of its kind in Somalia. It will be an addition to almost six disciplines offered by Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology include: Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, GIS and Enterprise Networking.
Speaking during the launch, Dr. Ibrahim Mohamed Mursal, President of Mogadishu University, said that this an investment to Somali youth to produce professionals with the knowledge to protect Somalia’s digital assets, emphasizing the need for Somalia to keep pace with the rapid development of artificial intelligence and encouraged cooperation among universities, government institutions, researchers and the private sector.
For students, the new program could provide opportunities to develop skills relevant to areas such as network and information security, protection of digital systems, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. The initiative is also expected to contribute to the development of a local workforce capable of supporting Somalia’s expanding digital economy as Mogadishu University is positioning students to respond to new technological challenges while developing skills that can help protect national digital infrastructure and enable Somali graduates to compete in an increasingly technology-driven global economy.
