Mogadishu University Celebrates World Press Freedom Day with a Green Initiative

Mogadishu, Somalia – In honor of World Press Freedom Day 2024, focused on “A Press for the Planet,” students from the Department of Journalism and Communication at Mogadishu University have taken a hands-on approach to environmental advocacy by organizing a significant tree planting event. The activity took place on the university’s main campus, where students, faculty, and community members came together to plant a variety of local tree species.

The department also arranged workshops and speeches that discussed the critical role of journalists in environmental advocacy, emphasizing the need for accurate reporting and active involvement in global sustainability efforts.

Mogadishu University continues to demonstrate its dedication to combining education with practical environmental actions, hoping to inspire other institutions and individuals to take similar steps towards a sustainable future.

Mogadishu University in China

Our Vice President for Relations and Development, Mohamed Ali Omar, attended the Annual Conference of China-Africa Consortium of Universities Exchange Mechanism in Beijing, China. The conference centered on China – Africa higher education cooperation and development in the digital age. The conference brought together university leaders from both China and Africa to promote collaboration in higher education. During this event, the Vice President engaged with prestigious institutions, fostering opportunities for academic and research partnerships that would benefit Our university and its relationships with universities across Africa and China. As part of his efforts to establish fruitful academic collaborations, the Vice President signed a collaborative agreement with Qilu University. This agreement aims to strengthen academic ties and facilitate exchange programs between the two institutions, furthering the internationalization of Mogadishu University​.

Mogadishu University launches faculty of civil aviation, the first of its kind in Somalia dedicated to civil aviation studies

Mogadishu University has launched a new faculty, dedicated to civil aviation a study which is a significant milestone towards shaping Somalia’s higher education landscape. In his remarks at the launching ceremony held at Jazeera Place Hotel on Tuesday, Mr. Ismail Omar, acting president, expressed gratitude to everyone involved in establishing the new faculty, noting that “the considerable effort to establish the faculty will play a vital role in improving airport operations, air traffic management, and enhancing flight guidance and produce aviation professionals. The director general of Somali Civil aviation Authority Ahmed Moalim emphasized the pressing need for the aviation college, which aims to equip Somali students with the crucial knowledge and skills necessary for a thriving aviation sector in Somalia Mogadishu University is breaking barriers, tackling aviation professionals’ shortage with a new aviation faculty this semester. The faculty of civil aviation is set to kick off classes in October 2024, bringing attention to new local education and career opportunities in the aviation industry. MU is now the only university nationwide with an aviation program. 

Collaboration Agreement with Sakarya University

During a recent official visit to Sakarya University, Dr. Ibrahim Mohamed Mursal, the President of Mogadishu University, led a distinguished delegation that was warmly welcomed by Prof. Dr. Hamza Al, the Rector of Sakarya University, setting the stage for a significant exchange of ideas. Throughout this visit, both institutions engaged in stimulating and fruitful discussions, culminating in the formal signing of a comprehensive cooperation agreement between Mogadishu University and Sakarya University. This milestone agreement reflects a strong commitment to nurturing mutual cooperation and collaboration across various academic pursuits, such as joint research activities, international workshops, and staff exchange programs. The signing of this pivotal agreement marks the beginning of a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing not only the academic experiences but also the research capabilities of both Mogadishu University and Sakarya University. This collaborative endeavor holds the promise of enriching the academic landscapes of both institutions, fostering a dynamic environment conducive to learning, innovation, and the exchange of knowledge.
