Program Description

A public health program refers to a range of initiatives and activities aimed at promoting healthy living and preventing the spread of diseases within a community or population. These programs can include education campaigns, access to healthcare services, environmental protection, and policy development to name a few. The goal of public health is to improve the overall well-being of individuals and populations by addressing health determinants and reducing health disparities. Public health programs can be implemented at the local, state, or national level and can involve various government agencies, non-profit organizations, and community stakeholders. It is centered on a common Conceptual Framework that is aligned with the mission of the University, to prepare effective reflective health professionals who are competent, caring and culturally-responsive.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Public Health, graduates will be able to:

  • Conduct basic and applied scientific research that are related to health and the environment in order to focus on community health issues, improve life, link the graduate to the community, and enrich his/her experiences and information.
  • Disseminate health information and increase awareness for all segments of society in all its cultures and participate in community service to ward off epidemics and disasters.
  • Facilitate trainings, workshops and seminars of staff working in public and private health care centers in order to maintain their professional competence and keep pace with modern scientific technologies and developments.
  • Meet the community’s need for qualified and field-trained health frameworks in the areas of public health.
  • Offer a variety of continually public health educational programs to students through applied and integrated learning that will prepare them for roles in the public health workforce.
  • Provide postgraduate studies at the master’s and doctoral levels to prepare specialized frameworks in various branches of public health and related fields.
  • Provide technical support to ministries and offices working under the public health department.
  • Set up the foundations, plans and standards for public health and environmental health related to the community.
  • Create the environment for everyone’s health to be good and equitable, and to eliminate preventable health inequities within a generation.

Program Requirements for the Degree

For successful completion of the PH degree, students must complete all components of the program, which carry a total of 231 credit hours over 8 semesters.

– Each Academic year consists of three semesters
– Students taking the exam at centers outside Somalia will pay the exam center fee between US$ 30 and US$ 80 per semester depending on the country where they are taking exams.
