( 11 Oct 2017 ) Cilmiwadaag Platform program of Mogadishu University Institute for Somali studies (ISOS) has presented a new book called “MAKING SENSE OF SOMALI HISTORY: Volume 1” written by Dr. Abdurrahman Abdullahi (Baadiyow).

The event has been attended by the University heads, Civil Society Organizations, and Somali Scholars and Intellectuals. The participants have acknowledged the importance of other elevating Somali history and issues related to Somalia.

Finally, the author has dedicated some copies to all members who have participated in the program.

Somali Studies: A peer-reviewed academic journal for Somali Studies [http://isos.so/index.php/about-this-journal] is a broad scope multidisciplinary journal devotes to Somali studies; published annually by the Institute for Somali Studies at Mogadishu University.
It aims to promote a scholarly understanding of Somalia and the Horn of Africa, specifically issues relevant to the Somali people, and the Somali diaspora communities around the globe.

(03 – Oct- 2017) Mr. Abdirahman Omar Addow has successfully defended his Masters Thesis titled: “factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy among parents in Mogadishu, Somalia”.

( 28 Sep 2017 ) We got an opportunity to interview Abdurahman Ismail Dhaqane, the dean of the faculty of Engineering and asked the following questions:

Q1.: When was the faculty established? And what was the reason for the establishment?

A1:  The faculty was established in 2013 after MU administration saw the country’s need for highly qualified engineers to address the pressing demands and after a long planning and thinking to open the faculty. This came after 18 years since the inception of the University.

Q2: What were the main achievements since its establishment?

A2:  The main achievements the faculty has achieved so far include: purchase of new engineering laboratory which is its first kind in the country. The lab helps students understand and reinforce theoretical concepts while doing their experiments. The faculty provides the students in the 5th year opportunities to conduct internships in various companies including construction companies where students can make more practical training.   The laboratory of the faculty is also used by local instruction companies where they conduct their experiments and tests.

Q3: What is your plan in rebuilding and constructing the country?

A.: As we know for almost the last three decades the country had profoundly been destroyed its buildings but now it is gradually recovering. We are striving for producing qualified civil engineers to get a better quality of construction and safety in our country. We also aim to increase engineering research innovations

Q4: How about the quality of the curriculum and teachers

A4:  Mogadishu University is internationally recognized university which is an active member of regional and international education associations. Since its establishment, the faculty has been committed to high standard academic excellence by proving internationally recognized curriculum. We also hired qualified foreign and Somali teachers.

Q5: What are the requirements when hiring a teacher?

A5:   We look both in terms of experience and Ph.D. degrees.

Q6:  Finally, what advice would you give to first year engineering student?   

QA6:  I would like to say freshman student in our faculty, as you are at the doorstep of a profession, be an active learner, hardworking student who also likes teamwork.

(26-Sep-2017) Today at the MU discussion hall, Ms. Farhia Abdullahi Hussein has successfully defended her Masters Thesis titled: “Problems and Challenges Faced by Professional Female Doctors Working in Mogadishu Hospitals”. On this very unique event, the university would like to congratulate Ms. Farhia Abdullahi Hussein and her family and let her know that ‘graduation is a process that goes on until the last day of your life.’ Moreover, the university wishes you to be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.

It’s our hope that the university has opened your mind to a world of possibilities, now it is your turn to open your mind to the world of impossibilities. Congratulations again and of course It has been a long hard road, but you accomplished your goal to pass the exams and complete your thesis as well. You have survived the struggle, now it is time to celebrate the success.

On Saturday, 16-09-2017, the first semester of the new academic year 2017-2018 began, in the all campuses of the university including the main campus.

The study began in a climate of hope and enthusiasm among the students for the beginning of the study.

(14 – Sep- 2017) Welcome Orientation week, which was designed to help our new  students transition to college life  concluded successfully at the main campus of the university.

During a whole week, the new students were given orientation programs including academic policies, regulations, and the student code of conduct. Among the speakers at the event, Prof.  Mohamed Hussein Isse, Dr. Sharif  and Dr. Mohamed Hassan, who welcomed the students and gave Orientation programs to the  students to become familiar with the new environment.

Finally concluding remarks was given to Prof. Ali Sheikh, a former president and  a member of board of Trustees of the university, who thanked all the administrative and academic staff,  the parents, and  the students and  gave an inspiring speech to the new students and that  “starting a university marks one of the most important transitions of you lives as you study and write critically”. He also briefed how the university started. “Since its inception, Mogadishu University has taken a major step toward restoring hope to the war-torn society and a new dawn emerged for many students”.

Orientation programs are usually held every year before the classes of academic year start. By giving a strong overview of academic expectations, students are better prepared to meet the challenges of collegiate academics

During the orientation program; students were also taken around the main campus to the facilities and services they would need during their study at the University.
